Reenacting - How to...

In General...

Go slow and take your time.  First you need to decide what side you want to join.  There are ramifications to either side.  Besides the historical and political implications, there are some practicalities to be taken into account.

If you join a Union unit, there is less freedom to equip yourself.  Most Union units were well supplied, so most Union impressions are more uniform (no pun intended).  Their clothing and head gear was more uniform, as were their muskets and equipment.  A Confederate unit, depending on which one, gives you more options as to the material to make your uniform out of and the equipment to use.

Spend a season traveling to local reenactments.  Talk to as many reenactors as you can, you will find individuals from every walk of life in our hobby.  Virtually every unit is looking for new members.  Every unit has it's own individual style or environment.

There are some units who are hardcore, they do first person impressions and will stay in character the entire event.  They will not allow any modern equipment, will sleep and eat only in a period correct manner.  Some period authentic units frown on family participation, or will maintain 2 camps, one military, the other civilian.

There are also family groups.  Family groups are usually surrounded by their dependents, and all the noise and discussions that go with them.  Some groups will attend events, and their members sleep in campers in the parking lot.

Some groups are very well organized with constitutions, bylaws and attendance requirements.  Others are run with a little less attention to detail.

If you join this hobby, you will be spending between $1,000.00 and $1,500.00 on uniforms, equipment and canvas tents that have little or no use in modern times.  Before you start spending money, try to determine if you and the groups style are going to be able to coexist.
